What is Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)?
 TMD is a cycle of pain, muscle spasms and joint imbalance where the jaw meets the skull. This joint is called the temporo - mandibular joint. It joins the temporal bone of the skull with the mandible bone of the jaw.
Symptoms
TMD can cause many different types of symptoms. In fact, it often causes symptoms very similar to other diseases and conditions. That's one reason why it can be so difficult for doctors to diagnose.
The most common symptom of TMD is pain or discomfort in the jaw joint or chewing muscles. Other symptoms may include:
- Popping, clicking or grating noises when the jaw opens and closes
- An inability to open the mouth wide
- Pain in the face, neck and shoulders
- A tired feeling in the face
- A sudden uncomfortable bite, as if the upper and lower teeth don't fit together the right way
- Swelling on the side of the face
Some people also have earaches, toothaches, headaches, ringing in the ears, dizziness and hearing problems.
What causes the problem?
Within the TMJ is a thin disc of cartilage that acts as a cushion between these two bones. When the balance in this important joint is lost, you can suffer from mild to severe pain, headaches, earaches, stiffness, muscle spasms and clicking or popping in the joint.

Easing the symptoms
